Cerebral Palsy
is a neurological disorder that affects body
movement and coordination caused by
abnormalities in the parts of the brain that
control muscle movement. The condition is
irreversible and permanent. In some cases of
cerebral palsy, the cerebral motor cortex
has not developed normally during fetal
development. In others, cerebral palsy may
be the result of an injury before, during,
or after birth.
The type and severity of
symptoms may differ greatly from one person
to the next. Some individuals with cerebral
palsy may also suffer from other medical
disorders, including mental retardation,
impaired vision or hearing, seizures, and
abnormal physical sensations or perceptions.
Symptoms may include the following:
-
Lack
of muscle coordination when performing
voluntary movements (ataxia)
-
Stiff
or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasticity)
-
Dragging one foot or leg when walking
-
Walking on one’s toes, or with a “scissored”
or crouched gait
-
Variations in muscle tone (stiffness or
floppiness)
-
Drooling excessively or difficulty in
speaking or swallowing
-
Shaking or involuntary random movements
(tremors)
-
Difficulty with precise movements, such as
buttoning a shirt or writing
According to the federal government’s Center for
Disease Control, approximately 10,000 babies
born in the U.S. each year will develop cerebral
palsy. There are approximately 800,000 children
and adults living in the U.S. who exhibit one or
more symptoms of cerebral palsy. Despite
advances in treating and preventing cerebral
palsy, the percentage of babies afflicted with
cerebral palsy has remained unchanged in the
past 30 years.
